Calcium propionate is used as a preservative for food grade in a wide variety of products, including but not limited to bread, other baked goods, processed meat, whey, and other dairy products. In agriculture, it is used, amongst other things, to prevent milk fever in cows and as a feed supplement propionate prevent microbes from producing the energy they need, like benzoates do. However, unlike benzoates, propionates do not require an acidic environment.
Calcium propionate is used in bakery products as a mold inhibitor, typically at 0.1-0.4% (though animal feed may contain up to 1%).

Calcium propionate is a new food grade additive that is a safe and reliable anti-mold agent for food and feed approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Calcium propionate has a wide range of antibacterial effects against molds, yeasts and bacteria.
1. Calcium propionate can be used as a fungicide for food and feed, and as a preservative for bread and cakes. 
2. Calcium propionate has an inhibitory effect on mold and Bacillus aeruginosa which can cause sticky substances in bread, and has no inhibitory effect on yeast.
3. It is effective against mold, aerobic spore-producing bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and aflatoxin in starch, protein and oil-containing substances, and has unique anti-mildew and anti-corrosive properties.
4. It is a new type of safe and efficient, broad-spectrum food and feed anti-mold agent for food and brewing, feed and traditional Chinese medicine preparations.
5. Calcium propionate as a feed additive can effectively inhibit the mildew of the feed and prolong the shelf life of the feed. 
6. Calcium propionate can also be used as a toothpaste, an additive for cosmetics, and has a good antiseptic effect.
7. A new type of feed additive, mainly used as an anti-fungal agent, which can prolong the shelf life of the feed. It has a good anti-killing effect on mold, aerobic bud-producing bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, and can also inhibit the production of aflatoxin, but is harmless to yeast, harmless to humans and animals, and has no toxic side effects. Can also be used as a preservative for food.
